A southern African country named after the stone-walled ruins of Great Zimbabwe, home to spectacular Victoria Falls and some of the continent's richest wildlife reserves.
Seven horizontal stripes of green, yellow, red and black, mirrored about the centre, with a black-edged white triangle at the hoist bearing a red five-pointed star and the golden Zimbabwe Bird. The constitution prescribes the flag by depicting it rather than describing it, while the flag statute does describe it, in one sentence of heraldic blazon that fixes the design and assigns nothing a meaning. The colour readings are published by the government rather than enacted: green for vegetation and agriculture, yellow for mineral wealth, red for the blood shed in the liberation war, black for the black majority, and the white triangle for peace. The government's reading gives the red star the nation's aspirations, not the revolution usually attached to it. The bird is the soapstone Zimbabwe Bird from Great Zimbabwe, the national emblem.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Zimbabwe Gold, usually written ZiG, arrived in 2024 as the latest in a long line of Zimbabwean currencies, backed by gold and reserves held at the central bank. US dollars remain legal tender and carry most everyday trade, so plenty of providers price the country in dollars instead.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Zimbabwe determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Money reaching Zimbabwe from abroad is treated as free funds, and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said plainly what that means for the person collecting it. In a policy clarification issued on 16 August 2024, the Governor stated that under the current exchange control regulations diaspora remittances are treated as free funds, which recipients can receive in foreign currency and change freely at their instance and at their preferred licensed agencies.
The same release then addresses the moment of collection directly, emphasising that recipients will not be forced to change their free funds at the point of collection or at any other time. The protection is written around a counter, which is where the central bank evidently expects the pressure to arise, and it leaves the decision to convert with the recipient rather than with whoever is handing the money over.
Before any of that, the name has to match. The Reserve Bank's guidance on the country's payment systems requires that when mobile money is sent there be a mechanism enabling verification of the name and number of the recipient before the transaction is completed, so what a sender types has to agree with how the recipient's account or wallet is registered. An agent must also conspicuously display the provider it acts for, its own unique identification, and the complaint procedure with a dedicated toll-free line.

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Zimbabwe can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Zimbabwe. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
