China is one of the world's oldest continuous civilisations and its most populous nation for most of modern history, stretching from Himalayan peaks to Pacific coastlines across a landscape the size of a continent.

  • The Great Wall of China is the longest wall ever built, winding for thousands of kilometres.
  • It gave the world paper, printing, gunpowder and the compass - often called its Four Great Inventions.
  • Giant pandas live in the wild only in its mountainous bamboo forests.
  • It spans a huge east-to-west distance but officially runs on a single time zone.
  • The Terracotta Army, thousands of life-sized clay soldiers, was buried to guard China's first emperor over 2,000 years ago.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field with five yellow five-pointed stars in the upper hoist - one large, four smaller ones arching to its right, each turned so a point aims at its centre. Red stands for revolution, and the official 1949 explanation reads the five stars together, rather than one by one, as the unity of the revolutionary people under Communist Party leadership.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Transfers to China settle in yuan (also called renminbi, CNY). Recipient-side rules - named-account checks and annual conversion limits for individuals - shape how this corridor works as much as the rate does. Mainland recipients face an annual foreign-exchange conversion allowance and named-account matching, so a transfer to an account whose name does not match the sender’s declaration can sit unconverted regardless of how good the rate was.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in China determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/CNY converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Sender details, and what happens when they are short

A rule that took effect on 1 January 2026 changes what an incomplete payment does when it lands. The People's Bank of China, with the National Financial Regulatory Administration and the securities regulator, issued measures on customer due diligence requiring an institution to register a remitter's name, account number and address alongside the payee's name and account number. For a single cross-border remittance above five thousand yuan, or the equivalent of a thousand US dollars, the institution must verify that the remitter information is accurate. Where funds remitted into China arrive with any of those details missing, the receiving institution must require the overseas institution to supply them, so a payment can sit while the Chinese bank goes back to the sending one.

The declaring party is the resident. Under the Measures for the Collection of Statistics and Declaration of the Balance of Payments, Chinese residents who transact with non-residents through domestic financial institutions declare the content of those transactions through those institutions, the bank fulfilling an intermediary obligation while the resident supplies the substance.

Cross-border renminbi moves on infrastructure of its own. The Cross-Border Interbank Payment System, run by CIPS Co., Ltd. under the People's Bank of China on a single-point access, centralised clearing model, provides clearing and settlement in renminbi and in Hong Kong dollars, and reported 210 direct and 1,619 indirect participants as at June 2026.

Common questions

How much Chinese yuan will I receive in China?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in China can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in China. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
