WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of India saffron, white and India green, with a navy-blue twenty-four-spoke Ashoka Chakra centred in the white band. The constitution refers to the National Flag only in the fundamental duties, which require every citizen to respect it, and never describes it or assigns it a meaning; the resolution that adopted the flag in 1947 describes the design in detail and says only that the wheel represents the charkha. The colours are conventionally read as saffron for renunciation, white for the path of truth and green for the relation to the soil, and the wheel as the wheel of the law of dharma, a reading taken from one member's speech in that debate rather than from any instrument.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Australia-India is one of the busiest remittance corridors out of Australia, and rupee amounts run large - a modest AUD transfer becomes a five- or six-figure INR sum. India requires the purpose of an inbound transfer to be declared and matched to the receiving account, so the recipient’s side of the paperwork is usually what decides how fast a transfer clears rather than the sending end. The annual limit people have in mind runs the other way: it caps what an Indian resident may send abroad, not what they may receive.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in India determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
India's domestic payment rails do not themselves take money from abroad. The Reserve Bank of India describes the Rupee Drawing Arrangement as a channel for receiving cross-border remittances, under which an authorised dealer bank holds accounts with regulated overseas exchange houses. The domestic systems enter only on the last leg. Where the beneficiary banks somewhere other than the receiving bank, that bank passes the credit on by an electronic method such as the national electronic funds transfer or the immediate payment service. The details that address it are the account number and the Indian Financial System Code of the receiving branch, eleven characters that the Reserve Bank describes as four identifying the bank, a fifth always zero and six more for the branch, from a directory it publishes and maintains.
Which arrangement carried the money decides whether any of it can be handed over across a counter. Under the Rupee Drawing Arrangement the Reserve Bank states that remittances cannot be disbursed as cash, and puts no cap on personal remittances while capping trade-related ones. Under the Money Transfer Service Scheme its master direction permits amounts up to fifty thousand rupees to be paid in cash to a beneficiary in India, with anything above that paid by account payee cheque, demand draft or payment order, or credited to the beneficiary's account.
The second scheme is narrow by design. It admits only inward personal remittances, such as money for family maintenance and money for foreign tourists visiting India; it caps an individual remittance at two thousand five hundred US dollars; and it allows a single beneficiary to receive thirty remittances in a calendar year. Donations to charitable institutions, trade-related payments, property purchases, investments and credits to non-resident external accounts fall outside it, and receiving banks credit only accounts that have completed their identification requirements.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in India can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in India. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
