The Philippines is an archipelago of over 7,000 islands strung across the western Pacific, where jeepneys, Spanish-era churches and some of the world's richest reefs all share the map.
It's made up of more than 7,600 islands, though a large share are uninhabited.
It's one of the world's biggest exporters of coconut products, and the leading exporter of coconut oil.
The Philippine eagle, one of the largest and rarest eagles on Earth, is its national bird.
The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are over a thousand near-identical mounds that turn brown in the dry season.
The Puerto Princesa Underground River flows through a spectacular limestone cave system, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Horizontal blue over red with a white equilateral triangle at the hoist framing a golden-yellow eight-rayed sun and three five-pointed stars. Section 4 of the Flag and Heraldic Code names only the colours, the eight-rayed sun and the three stars, and assigns no meanings, but section 10 legislates the flag's best known feature: flown from a flagpole the blue field is on top in time of peace and the red field on top in time of war. The 1898 declaration of independence, which did assign meanings, gives the three stars to Luzon, Mindanao and Panay and says the blue, red and white commemorate the flag of the United States. The familiar reading of blue for peace and justice, red for patriotism and valour, white for equality and the third star for the Visayas is the flag maker's, not the state's.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The Australia-Philippines corridor runs heavily on remittances home, and peso amounts add up fast - a modest AUD transfer lands as a four- or five-figure PHP sum, so the margin on the rate matters more than any flat fee. Many recipients collect in cash from an agent rather than a bank account, so the payout network matters as much as the rate: the same provider can be quick in Manila and slow in a province it does not directly serve.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the Philippines determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas restricts inward remittance of its own currency. Its frequently asked questions on cross-border transfers, published in December 2025, set out the rule as amended by Circular No. 1146 of 26 May 2022: only fifty thousand pesos may be inwardly remitted from an offshore bank to a local Philippine bank without prior authorisation from the central bank, and above that figure the money must be converted into foreign currency before it is remitted to the local bank. No such limit applies to foreign currency remitted in.
The addressing is correspondingly plain. The central bank's own sample of an inbound cross-border credit transfer identifies the receiving correspondent by its business identifier code and the beneficiary by an account number and a name, with nothing resembling an international bank account number in the message. Once the money has landed and been converted, domestic settlement runs through the two automated clearing houses established under the National Retail Payment System, InstaPay carrying real-time low-value credits and PESONet clearing in batches, both under the framework the central bank set out in Circular 980.
Money carried in by hand is governed separately, and by the same fifty-thousand-peso figure. A person may freely bring in legal tender Philippine currency up to that amount; above it, prior written authorisation from the central bank is required and the whole amount must be declared on the prescribed Currencies Declaration Form. For foreign currency and other bearer instruments, among them travellers' cheques, drafts and money orders, the free threshold is ten thousand US dollars or its equivalent, and beyond that the whole amount is declared on the same form. The declaration can be filed through the travel customs system within seventy-two hours before arrival.
How much Philippine peso will I receive in the Philippines?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the Philippines can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the Philippines. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
