The share of Zimbabwe's payments made in Zimbabwe's currency

Most national currencies are used at home by default. Zimbabwe's is not, and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe publishes the measurement itself: the proportion of national payments made in ZiG peaked at 43 per cent in May 2025 and averaged between 35 and 40 per cent for the greater part of that year. The remainder went through in something else, chiefly the US dollar, which circulates lawfully beside it. The Bank describes the intended endpoint as a smooth, market-led transition to a mono currency by 2030 - a timetable, set out in a monetary policy statement, for a currency to become the ordinary one in its own country.

What stands behind it is stated as a ratio. In its 2026 Monetary Policy Statement, issued in February 2026 under section 46 of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Act, the Bank recorded foreign currency reserves of US$1.2 billion covering local reserve money of ZiG5.3 billion about six times over, measured at 31 December 2025.

The unit arrived in April 2024 in place of the Zimbabwe dollar, at a conversion factor the Bank published to four decimal places, 2498.7242, with the old notes remaining legal tender only until the end of that month. The physical currency has been refreshed since: an upgraded BiG5 series of 10, 20 and 50 ZiG notes entered circulation on 7 April 2026 under Statutory Instrument 37 of 2026, with the earlier notes co-circulating alongside them.

For a visitor the practical position follows from all of that. The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority states that travellers face no restriction on bringing currency into the country, subject to declaring it on the customs form, while taking currency out is capped and needs Exchange Control approval above the cap.
