An S-shaped stretch of Southeast Asia running from misty northern highlands to the Mekong Delta, Vietnam grows enough coffee to rank among the world's biggest exporters.

  • It's one of the world's largest exporters of coffee, especially robusta beans.
  • Ha Long Bay's thousands of limestone karst islands rising from the sea are a natural wonder.
  • Its long, narrow shape gives it a coastline stretching over 3,000 kilometres.
  • The Mekong Delta is so fertile it's often called the country's rice bowl.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field with a single large five-pointed gold star at the centre, the flag two thirds as wide as it is long. Article 13 of the constitution fixes those proportions and that design and assigns them no meaning. The red is conventionally read for revolution and the blood of struggle, and the star's five points for the scholar, the farmer, the worker, the merchant and the soldier.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The dong trades in the largest numbers of any currency in this set - one Australian dollar buys tens of thousands of them, so even small transfers produce seven-figure amounts. Confirm the quote is per single dong and not per thousand before comparing anything.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Vietnam determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/VND converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Currency the recipient may keep

Decision 170/1999 governs what a person in Vietnam may do with money sent from abroad, and the Government's own newspaper still sets out its terms. Money may enter through a licensed credit institution, through an enterprise providing international postal financial services, or carried in on entry with a customs declaration. The beneficiary may choose to receive foreign currency or dong, may deposit it into a foreign currency account, keep it in savings or sell it to a bank, and pays no income tax on foreign currency transferred in from abroad.

The receiving account has to be usable before any of that matters. The State Bank of Vietnam requires a holder's biometric data to be matched against the chip in their identity card before a payment account or card may be used for electronic transactions. The rule began in July 2024 with individual transfers above ten million dong, or twenty million dong in a day, and extended to accounts generally from 1 January 2025. An account whose holder has not enrolled, or whose identity document has expired, keeps existing while losing its electronic payment and withdrawal functions.

Between Vietnamese banks the money then moves through NAPAS, the licensed switching and electronic clearing provider in which the State Bank holds 49 per cent of the charter capital. Its fast transfer service runs continuously between member banks, addressed by account selection or by a domestic quick-response code, and is a service within Vietnam.

Common questions

How much Vietnamese dong will I receive in Vietnam?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Vietnam can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Vietnam. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
