About the AUD/VND rate
The AUD/VND rate is how many VND one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/VND rate history.

How the daily rate is decided
Vietnam publishes the recipe for its own exchange rate. Since January 2016 the State Bank of Vietnam has adjusted the dong against the US dollar daily on three declared inputs: the previous day's weighted average dong-dollar rate, a weighted average of the dong's movements against seven other important trading partners' currencies, and domestic macroeconomic conditions. Commercial banks may then deal within a band around the result, which sets a ceiling and a floor for that day.
The band has been opened twice, and the direction is consistent. In August 2015 it went from plus or minus one per cent to three, with the central parity devalued by one per cent at the same time; in October 2022 it went from three per cent to five. The International Monetary Fund classifies the arrangement as managed floating in law and crawl-like in practice, and records that the State Bank has gradually increased exchange rate flexibility. Each widening lets more pressure through without handing the rate to the market.
That works because there is no second market to arbitrage against the first. The dong is not convertible outside Vietnam in any meaningful sense: banks abroad do not generally hold it, and notes brought home from a holiday are difficult to change back. A currency with no offshore price is one whose authorities can keep the onshore price inside a corridor.
Behind the corridor is a large and settled community. The 2021 Census counted 257,997 people in Australia who were born in Vietnam. Money moving between the two countries is family money to a degree unusual even among Australia's remittance corridors, and it flows steadily through the year, which is a different pattern from a tourist currency.
