About the AUD/MYR rate

The AUD/MYR rate is how many MYR one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/MYR rate history.

What Bank Negara means by a non-internationalised currency

A central bank ordinarily writes rules for what happens inside its own country. Bank Negara Malaysia writes them for what happens outside it as well. In November 2016 it stated that the ringgit "remains as a non-internationalised currency, thus any offshore trading of ringgit such as ringgit non-deliverable forward (NDF) is not recognized". In August 2017 it went further and named the whole category: offshore ringgit trading "in any form whether as a non-deliverable forward traded out of offshore financial centres or as a futures, options and other derivative contracts on exchanges outside of Malaysia, is against Malaysia's policy", with contravention an offence under the Financial Services Act 2013 and the Islamic Financial Services Act 2013.

The limit on physically carrying the currency is set in someone else's money. Under a gazette notice made in 2013 under those same two Acts, a person arriving in or departing from Malaysia may carry ringgit "not exceeding an aggregate amount of ten thousand United States Dollars equivalent", and exceeding that without the Bank's written approval is an offence. Foreign currency itself moves in and out unrestricted. The ringgit is the one with a ceiling, and its ceiling is quoted in dollars.

Domestically the movement has gone the other way, which is what shows the offshore line to be a standing choice. The requirement that resident exporters convert their export proceeds into ringgit was removed with effect from 15 April 2021, so exporters now manage conversion according to their own foreign currency cash-flow needs.
