Horizontal bands of deep blue, white and deep green divided by thin red fimbriations, with a white crescent and twelve white five-pointed stars in the upper hoist. Article 5 of the constitution leaves the state symbols to be approved by law, and the 1991 flag law sets the design out in centimetres without interpreting any element of it. Different state publications give different readings: the blue as the sky and water or as strength and stability, the white as peace, the green as nature, the red as the life force or the blood of ancestors, the crescent as the young republic or as Islam, and the twelve stars as a number standing for completeness.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

Uzbekistan unified its exchange rate in 2017, ending a long-standing split between an official rate and a parallel one. The som trades in very large numbers, so a modest transfer arrives as a seven-figure sum.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. The Central Bank publishes the shape of what arrives. Cross-border transfers into Uzbekistan came to 14.8 billion US dollars in 2024, up 30 per cent on the year before. Of that, 8.2 billion arrived through international money transfer systems and 5.9 billion as direct card-to-card credits from abroad, a route growing at 51 per cent a year. Bank transfers over SWIFT, the interbank messaging cooperative, accounted for 774 million. The route an Australian bank would use is much the smallest of the three, and it grew at 2.1 times the previous year, against 51 per cent for card credits and 14 for the transfer systems.
Collecting one in cash is a scripted transaction. The state services portal sets out the steps: attend a branch with an identity document, which it names as a passport or ID card; tell the operator the control code, the amount and the currency; sign an application; take the cash from the till. Stating the currency falls to the recipient, as part of that script. Collecting a transfer that arrived in another person's name is not permitted.
What lands stays what it was. The same portal says international transfers by individuals are unrestricted and that funds are issued to citizens in the currency in which they arrived. The 2019 currency law agrees from the other end: a resident individual may own currency values transferred into Uzbekistan and use them at their own discretion, may hold foreign-currency accounts inside the country and outside it, and may move foreign currency between them without limit.
The constraint sits one step later, when the money is spent. Settlements for goods, work and services inside Uzbekistan are made in the national currency, and prices may not be tied to a foreign one. Buying and selling foreign currency is routed exclusively through banks. So what a recipient decides is when to convert. Which currency the money may sit in is already settled.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Uzbekistan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
