Six horizontal bands of black, yellow and red repeated twice, with the crested crane, Uganda's national bird, on a white circle in the centre. The National Flag and Armorial Ensigns Act of 1962 sets the design out in a single sentence of its Schedule and gives no element a meaning, and the constitution does not describe the flag at all. The black, yellow and red were the colours of the Uganda People's Congress, the party that won the election of April 1962. Ugandan state publications differ on the readings: the black as the African people or as African heritage and the country's soil, the yellow as Africa's sunshine or as Uganda's sunny days, and the red as African brotherhood or as the blood that links Ugandans to everyone else.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
The Ugandan shilling has no fractional unit in practical use, so amounts are whole numbers, quotes carry no decimals and nothing corresponds to cents. The unit is small enough that an ordinary transfer becomes a six- or seven-figure sum, which makes one misplaced digit easy to overlook.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Uganda determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Uganda's national identification number is what establishes who a recipient is, and it is not an address a payment can be sent to. The assessment of Uganda's payment infrastructure published by the United Nations Capital Development Fund with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development records that a holder of the national identity card can open a bank or mobile money account, and that electronic money issuers, payment service providers and payment system operators have access to the centralised national identity database for validating know-your-customer details.
What does not yet exist is the directory that would let a phone number stand in for an account. The same assessment states that for directory services to work in support of instant payments, an upgrade to a properly functioning identity platform is needed. It also records that the central bank's national payment switch is in the early stages of implementation, with the interbank network supported in the meantime by a private platform that does not serve all commercial banks.
One limitation falls on families in particular. As at the end of December 2022 national identity cards were not being issued overseas at embassies or consulates, which the assessment names as a limitation for the diaspora obtaining them. At the collecting end it records that eighty per cent of remittances sent through money transfer operator channels are picked up in cash, with the remaining fifth credited to accounts reachable by card or, in some cases, a mobile wallet. Uganda has no entry in the ISO 13616 registry either, so the identity card a recipient carries to that counter is doing work no account identifier could have done in the payment itself.

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Uganda can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Uganda. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
