Where Uganda's foreign currency comes from
Uganda's Daily Monitor, reporting the Bank of Uganda's Cross-Border Remittance Report for 2025, put inflows from Ugandans abroad at about 2.5 billion United States dollars, arriving across more than 16 million separate transactions. On the same reporting, coffee earned roughly 2.46 billion in that year and tourism brought in about 1.62 billion. Money sent home is the largest of the three.
The Monitor's account of the report gives the United States as the largest source at about 702 million dollars, or 28 per cent of the total, followed by Saudi Arabia at about 380 million. With the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Canada, those five countries account for 71.2 per cent of everything received. Australia is not among them.
Uganda sends money outward too, and the Monitor reports both sides of the account. The same reporting puts outflows at 402 million dollars in 2025, down from 502 million the year before, going mainly to India, Kenya, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Against inflows of about 2.5 billion, the country remains a substantial net recipient, by a margin larger than its tourism receipts.
On the same reporting, the balance of payments moved with it: remittances alongside coffee and gold export receipts are credited with taking the current account from a deficit of about 995 million dollars to a surplus of roughly a billion.
The Bank of Uganda has been making this easier to see. In 2026 it launched an interactive remittance dashboard with the International Fund for Agricultural Development, publishing the data monthly at transaction level.
