Home to Africa's tallest mountain and one of its greatest wildlife spectacles, Tanzania is where the Serengeti's wildebeest run and Kilimanjaro's snows sit almost on the equator.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on Earth.
  • The Serengeti hosts the great migration, where over a million wildebeest move in a vast annual loop.
  • The islands of Zanzibar were once the world's leading producer of cloves.
  • Olduvai Gorge here has yielded some of the oldest known human ancestor fossils, earning it the nickname 'the cradle of humankind'.
  • Lake Tanganyika, on its border, is the second-deepest freshwater lake in the world.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A field split by a black diagonal band edged in two narrower bands, which the flag law calls golden, with a green triangle at the upper hoist and a blue triangle at the lower fly. The constitution has no flag provision. The design is prescribed instead by the National Emblems Act, which describes it and assigns no element a meaning. Tanzania's school curriculum reads the green for the land and its natural vegetation, the black for people of African origin, the blue for the sea, the lakes and the rivers, and the narrow bands, which it calls yellow, for mineral resources.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania all use a currency called the shilling, descended from the single East African shilling that circulated until the 1960s, but the three are separate and sit at very different values. Tanzanian sums run into the thousands for even a modest Australian amount.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Tanzania determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/TZS converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

An arriving transfer that finishes as a domestic instant credit

Tanzania's instant payment system has been opened to money arriving from outside the country. The Bank of Tanzania's National Payment Systems Annual Report for 2025 records that the system was expanded to facilitate incoming international money transfers directly to beneficiaries through domestic bank accounts and mobile wallets, and lists a circular issued to guide international money transfer through it. An arriving payment can therefore finish as a domestic instant credit, not as a link in a correspondent chain.

Where it finishes is, in practice, usually a wallet. The same report puts incoming remittances handled by banks at 1.45 million transactions across the year, against 8.74 million facilitated by electronic money issuers. That is roughly six inbound remittance transactions terminating at a wallet for every one terminating at a bank, which is worth knowing before deciding which details to pass on.

The system is run by the central bank itself under the National Payment Systems Act, alongside the interbank settlement system and the clearing house; the Bank treats all three as systemically important and reports their combined availability at 99.58 per cent for the year. One point of care about addressing: the Bank describes termination as being to domestic bank accounts and mobile wallets, not to a directory alias, so what a sender needs is an account number or the wallet's own number rather than a nickname or a shortcut.

Common questions

How much Tanzanian shilling will I receive in Tanzania?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Tanzania can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Tanzania. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
