About the AUD/TZS rate
The AUD/TZS rate is how many TZS one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/TZS rate history.
Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, TZS → AUD, is on the receiving Tanzanian shilling view, and sending Australian dollars to Tanzania is covered on the AUD → TZS transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.
What visitors bring in, and what they may pay with
TanzaniaInvest, reporting the 2024 International Visitors' Exit Survey that the Bank of Tanzania publishes with the National Bureau of Statistics and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, gives 2,141,895 international arrivals in 2024 against 1,808,205 the year before, and tourism earnings of 3,903.1 million United States dollars against 3,373.8 million in 2023. Visitors are an export industry here in the balance-of-payments sense of the term.
Zanzibar accounted for 601,006 of those arrivals on its own, on the same reporting. A survey run jointly by the central bank and the statistics office is not a tourism promotion exercise; it exists because the money it counts is a balance-of-payments line.
The composition of that flow is shifting in a way that touches this corridor specifically. On the same reporting, the survey names the United States as the largest source market, followed by Italy and Kenya, and records China, South Africa and Australia entering the top fifteen source markets for the first time.
Earning foreign currency and permitting its domestic use are separate questions, and Tanzania has recently separated them sharply. The Foreign Currency Regulations 2025, made under section 70 of the Bank of Tanzania Act and in force from 28 March 2025, require that goods and services within Tanzania be priced and settled in Tanzanian shillings, make it an offence to quote or advertise a price in a foreign currency, and require existing foreign-currency contracts to be renegotiated into shillings within a year. Defined exceptions remain, among them foreign currency loans from licensed banks and duty-free shop payments.
Visitors are not shut out by that rule, but the route changed. Foreign currency may still be used through licensed banks, bureaux, cards or mobile payment rails. What stopped was handing dollars across a counter.
