A mountainous island off China's coast where night markets, chip factories and misty tea terraces coexist, Taiwan packs 23 million people onto a landmass smaller than Switzerland.
Taipei 101 was the world's tallest building from 2004 until Dubai's Burj Khalifa opened in 2010.
It produces the majority of the world's most advanced computer chips.
Bubble tea, the milk tea with chewy tapioca pearls, was invented here in the 1980s.
Roughly two-thirds of the island is covered in forested mountains, pushing most cities to the western plains.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A red field with a blue canton bearing a white sun with twelve triangular rays, the 'Blue Sky, White Sun'. Article 6 of the constitution says only that the national flag shows a red field with a blue sky and a white sun in the upper left corner, and the national emblem and national flag act, which counts the twelve rays and fixes each at thirty degrees, assigns them no meaning either. Officially published glosses read the colours for the Three Principles of the People, with blue for nationalism and liberty, white for democracy and equality and red for the people's livelihood and fraternity, and read the twelve rays for the twelve months of a year and the twelve two-hour periods of a day.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The New Taiwan dollar is not freely traded outside Taiwan and its central bank is an active participant in setting where it sits. Inward transfers are routine and well served, but the offshore rate is a step removed from the onshore one.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Taiwan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Taiwan attaches a declaration to foreign exchange rather than to the transfer itself. The regulations governing declaration of foreign exchange receipts, disbursements and transactions apply to a person in Taiwan who possesses or needs foreign exchange with a value equal to or over five hundred thousand New Taiwan dollars. It is the handling of the currency that triggers it, so money that arrives and sits in a foreign currency account is in a different position from money converted into local currency.
For a non-resident the rules add a requirement about how, not just whether. Where a non-resident individual is declaring a settlement of foreign exchange against the New Taiwan dollar, the regulations state that the declaration shall be made in person, with a passport or other identification documents.
A non-resident legal entity has to authorise a representative or agent in Taiwan to declare on its behalf. There are separate provisions for a single remittance by a non-resident up to the equivalent of one hundred thousand US dollars, and annual settlement amounts above which further requirements apply, with the central bank expressly empowered to adjust those amounts in the light of economic and financial conditions.
Once the money is inside the country the settlement is well established. The central bank's interbank funds transfer system handles large-value payments in real time across its participating institutions and connects to the network run by the Financial Information Service Company to settle interbank remittances. That company describes its remittance platform as complying with the international messaging standards and reaching thousands of branches with same-day processing. Taiwan does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry.
How much New Taiwan dollar will I receive in Taiwan?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Taiwan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Taiwan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
