A landlocked knot of high mountains in Central Asia, Tajikistan is so vertical that more than half the country sits above 3,000 metres, with peaks that were once the highest in the Soviet Union.
More than 90% of the country is mountainous, dominated by the towering Pamir range.
Its highest peak, Ismoil Somoni, was the tallest mountain in the entire Soviet Union.
Tajik is a variety of Persian, making it linguistically close to the languages of Iran and Afghanistan.
The Pamir Highway that crosses it is one of the highest paved international roads on Earth.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of red, white and green, the white one and a half times the width of either coloured band, with a gilt stylised crown centred on the white beneath an arc of seven five-pointed stars. Article 3 of the constitution names the flag among the state symbols and says nothing further, and the description the Assembly of Representatives approved in 2007 fixes the geometry and the colour values without assigning any element a meaning. The state's own readings are not in the instruments at all, and they vary between the speeches and publications that carry them: red for the struggle and sacrifice for freedom and independence, white for fortune and hope, green for flourishing and eternity, and the crown and stars together for the historical roots of Tajik statehood.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Tajikistan is similarly dependent on money sent home by workers abroad, and the somoni’s value has moved with conditions in the labour markets those workers are in. Formal transfer options from Australia are thin.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Tajikistan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Membership of Tajikistan's national payment system is not something a bank decides. The Law on Payment Services and the Payment System, adopted in October 2016, provides that where the Government or the National Bank takes part in managing a payment system and its infrastructure operators, the system is recognised as national. The consequence follows in the same sentence: all banks resident in Tajikistan, Islamic banks included, must be participants. The National Bank's own system is declared systemically important by the statute itself, with no assessment required.
What has to travel with the money is set out in the same law, and the interesting half concerns a recipient with no account. The sending provider must hold both parties' names and account numbers, and where there is no account number it must instead carry a unique reference number allowing the operation to be traced. If that information is absent the provider has no discretion. It must refuse to execute the transfer. There is no Tajik entry among the eighty-nine account formats in the international register, so the number carries no country prefix and no registered structure.
At the other end the duty falls on identification. Providers must verify and identify the person receiving a transfer, and keep what they gather for five years at least. A related provision draws a harder line for electronic money: a client who has not been identified may not be the recipient of a person-to-person electronic transfer at all. The bar falls on the receiving end of the transaction.
Above all of it sits a commitment made in 2004. Tajikistan accepted the obligations of Article VIII of the International Monetary Fund's Articles of Agreement from 9 December that year, and the Fund's 2025 assessment records it as maintaining no restrictions on the making of payments and transfers for current international transactions.
How much Tajikistani somoni will I receive in Tajikistan?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Tajikistan can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Tajikistan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
