What remittances are worth to Tajikistan

On World Bank figures, personal remittances received by Tajikistan came to 47.2 per cent of gross domestic product in 2024. That is the highest ratio of any country measured, ahead of Tonga at 39.2 per cent and Nicaragua at 26.6 per cent. In dollars the same year it was US$6.80 billion.

The number's instability is as informative as its size. On the same World Bank series the share was 26.9 per cent in 2020, rose to 49.9 per cent in 2022, fell back to 37.8 per cent in 2023 and returned to 47.2 per cent in 2024. Movements of that amplitude in a single line of the balance of payments are a description of an economy whose income is decided in someone else's labour market.

The International Monetary Fund's description of what the money does once it arrives is the part that turns a payments statistic into a description of the economy: with many households having a family member working abroad, it wrote, remittances remain high, and these inflows offset persistent low employment and underpin consumption and growth.

The exchange rate is managed rather than left to absorb those swings on its own. The International Monetary Fund's 2021 Article IV consultation records the National Bank as having engineered a 16.6 per cent depreciation of the somoni against the US dollar during 2020, while its real effective exchange rate moved only about 2 per cent, and notes that efforts to reform the functioning of the foreign exchange market have lagged. The Bank's inflation target range is 6 per cent with a tolerance of 2 percentage points either side.
