One of the cradles of civilisation, Syria's capital Damascus ranks among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on Earth, and its markets have anchored trade routes for thousands of years.

  • Damascus is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.
  • The ancient city of Palmyra was a wealthy caravan hub linking the Roman world with the East.
  • Syria was part of the Fertile Crescent, where some of the earliest farming and cities emerged.
  • The city of Aleppo is home to one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world.
  • Ugarit, on the Syrian coast, produced one of the earliest known alphabets.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Three horizontal bands of green, white and black with three red five-pointed stars on the central band. Article 6 of the Constitutional Declaration of 13 March 2025 prescribes it after the fall of the Assad government, reviving a design written into the draft constitution of 1928 and first flown in Aleppo in 1932. That article describes the flag and gives no part of it a meaning, and nor do the flag clauses of 1928, 1950 and 2012. One reading takes the three stars for the statelets the mandate had divided the country into.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Transfers into Syria run into sanctions and very limited correspondent banking, and few providers offer the corridor at all. Any pound figure shown here is a reference rate rather than a description of what a recipient could actually obtain.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Syria determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/SYP converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The central bank approves each network contract

A Syrian exchange company that wants to join an international money transfer network submits the draft contract to the central bank before it signs anything. The Bank's published service description covers exactly that: approval for operating joint-stock exchange companies to contract with Arab and foreign companies owning global money transfer networks, or with their agents, under decisions of January 2010 and November 2011. With the draft go the network's commercial register, certified and translated into Arabic by a sworn translator in Syria, its branch locations worldwide, and confirmation of agency where the contract runs through one. The file ends with a decision of the Bank's management committee. Approval attaches to the contract, not to the company.

Getting licensed at all is a separate exercise, and it falls almost entirely on the individuals behind the business. Exchange companies and offices are entered in a record kept by the Banking Supervision Department. Every founder supplies a curriculum vitae, proof of residence issued within the past three months, a criminal record extract and a certificate that they are not a public servant.

An accountant then certifies their financial position and their liabilities to banks at home and abroad. They must declare any shareholding in an exchange business inside or outside Syria, produce certified declarations of their own bank accounts in both places with references from at least two banks, and undertake not to breach the 2006 law the sector runs under. The Bank publishes the resulting list.

Two things a sender would want are not published. There is no Syrian entry in the international register of account formats as at its June 2026 release, so a recipient has no registered format to hand over and a sending bank has nothing to validate a number against. Nor could any current central bank instruction on the currency an arriving remittance is paid out in be found. Neither absence is evidence that no rule exists.

Common questions

How much Syrian pound will I receive in Syria?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Syria can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Syria. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
