About the AUD/SYP rate
The AUD/SYP rate is how many SYP one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/SYP rate history.

The note swap, and what happens to the old paper
Syria changed its money at the start of 2026. Two zeros came off in a redenomination, and Al Jazeera, reporting from Damascus, recorded the new notes entering circulation on 1 January in denominations running from 10 to 500 pounds. Removing zeros does not change what the money is worth; it changes how many digits it takes to say so, which after nearly fourteen years of war was the practical problem.
The design was the announcement. The Syrian Arab News Agency reported ahead of the issue that the new notes would carry no portraits, and the series that appeared instead depicts roses, wheat, olives and oranges. Syria's leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, described the design as an expression of national identity and a move away from the veneration of individuals, which is an unusually direct statement of what a banknote is for.
The Central Bank of Syria confirmed on 26 July 2026 that old banknotes would cease to be legal tender from 31 July, ending months of speculation about an extension, and set 30 July as the last day they could be exchanged at financial institutions and designated centres. Enab Baladi reported the bank's governor, Mohammad Safwat Raslan, telling a Damascus roundtable on 10 July that roughly 80 per cent of the old currency had been replaced since the start of the year.
Old notes did not become worthless on 31 July, but they did become an application. Under the same instructions, a five-year withdrawal and redemption period began that day, conducted exclusively through the Central Bank of Syria, with each application required to cover at least a hundred banknotes regardless of denomination and the value credited to a bank account in new pounds. No commission, fee or tax is charged. A holder of ninety old notes and no bank account is outside that process entirely.
