About the AUD/IRR rate

The AUD/IRR rate is how many IRR one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/IRR rate history.

What Iran's redenomination law actually does

Iran's government proposed renaming the rial the toman, and parliament said no. The toman is the unit Iranians have quoted prices in informally for generations, worth ten thousand rials, so adopting it as the official name would have matched the law to the street. The Economic Commission of the Islamic Consultative Assembly rejected that in August 2025, and both Iran International and bne IntelliNews record the reason lawmakers gave: article 58(a) of the Central Bank law defines the rial as legal tender, and they chose continuity.

What passed keeps the name and changes the arithmetic. The measure redefines one rial as ten thousand current rials, removing four zeros, and subdivides it into one hundred qiran, reviving a historic fractional unit that the government's own draft had proposed using as the subunit beneath a renamed toman. Parliament carried it by 144 votes to 108 with three abstentions of 262 members present. Mizan Online, the news agency of Iran's judiciary, records President Masoud Pezeshkian promulgating the resulting law on 22 November 2025 and communicating it to the Central Bank for implementation.

The transition period is specified in the law itself. As reproduced by the Iranian legal portal Ekhtebar, the amendment carries five notes: parallel circulation runs for a maximum of three years, after which obligations expressed in old rials are payable only in new rials or qiran; the Central Bank has two years to have implementation arrangements ready and must announce the start of the transition through the official gazette, electronic portals and the state broadcaster.

What the change does to everyday amounts shows in the Central Bank's own catalogues, which list two kinds of paper separately. Its banknote page runs to a highest denomination of one hundred thousand rials. Its Iran cheque page, a distinct instrument the Bank issues and catalogues on its own, runs from five hundred thousand up to ten million rials, the last dated 2026. Under the statutory ratio that ten million cheque restates as one thousand of the new unit.
