The smallest sovereign country in South America, Suriname is a Dutch-speaking outlier where rainforest blankets most of the land and cultures from four continents share the same streets.
It's the smallest country in South America by both area and population.
It's the only country in the Americas where Dutch is the official language.
More than 90% of the country is covered by tropical rainforest.
Its population blends Indian, Javanese, African, Indigenous, Chinese and European heritage in one small nation.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Five horizontal bands of green, white, red, white and green, the red band double the width of the greens and four times that of the whites, with a single yellow five-pointed star at the centre. The government's own description of the flag gives the green for the country's fertility and its hopeful expectation, the white for justice and freedom, the red for love that leads to deeds and for progressiveness, and the star for the unity of the nation and a golden future.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Suriname moved to a market-determined exchange rate in 2021, after a long stretch in which the official rate and the rate people actually dealt at disagreed. US dollars and euros are used for larger transactions, and the country’s strongest overseas ties run to the Netherlands rather than to its South American neighbours.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Suriname determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The national system, and the currencies it learned to carry
The Centrale Bank van Suriname records its own payment system's history as a sequence of currencies. The Suriname National Electronic Payment System has been in operation since 2015, when it carried interbank transfers in Surinamese dollars alone. United States dollar transfers were added in 2019 and euro transfers in 2021, and the Bank's own milestone table carries a fast-payments phase against 2026. Before the system existed, interbank payments were often handled manually and could take considerably longer to reach the beneficiary; by 2025 the Bank puts the average at one business day.
The system therefore carries interbank transfers in three currencies, not one. Smaller payments are processed at scheduled intervals through the day; large ones are handled individually during business hours.
The International Monetary Fund's 2025 Article IV report ties Suriname's anti-money-laundering and beneficial-ownership reforms to the maintenance of its correspondent banking relationships.
The place a recipient collects from, if it is not a bank, is on a list the central bank publishes. Under article 11 of the Wet Toezicht Geldtransactiekantoren 2012, as last amended in 2021, the Bank keeps a register of money transaction offices and publishes it by formal notice. The edition current at the end of December 2025 sets the offices out in two classes, each with its address and its branches named, so an address given to a recipient can be checked against the register.
How much Surinamese dollar will I receive in Suriname?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Suriname can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Suriname. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
