About the AUD/SRD rate

The AUD/SRD rate is how many SRD one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/SRD rate history.

Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, SRD → AUD, is on the receiving Surinamese dollar view, and sending Australian dollars to Suriname is covered on the AUD → SRD transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

What happens to a Surinamese note after it is called in

When the Centrale Bank van Suriname calls in a banknote, the law gives the holder a very long tail. Article 19 of the Central Bank Act lets the Bank call on holders to offer notes for exchange after notifying the Minister, sets the term for doing so, and requires the call notice and that term to be published at least once in the Official Gazette and on the Bank's website.

What happens after the deadline is the part worth knowing. Once the term expires, the notes are exchanged only at the Bank in Paramaribo, and only after an investigation of no longer than three months has shown the request to exchange has been reasonably complied with, a period the Executive Board may extend in special circumstances. Ten years after the term expires, the value of recalled notes still not returned is added to the Bank's profit for the year. Thirty years after it expires, the right to exchange them lapses altogether.

The Bank's obligations while a note is in circulation are set out just as precisely. Article 18 provides that it pays no compensation for the loss or destruction of banknotes, and is not obliged to compensate for parts of banknotes except under guarantees the Executive Board considers necessary to prevent the Bank incurring losses. Where a criminal offence is suspected, or an interested party asks in writing, the Bank may require whoever presents the notes to endorse them.

Denominations are set by the Executive Board rather than by statute or ministry, under article 17, and must be brought to public attention in the Official Gazette and on the Bank's website. Notes returning to the Bank's cash desks and judged unsuitable for reissue are marked so as to be unusable and destroyed; if such a marked note reaches circulation again by theft or otherwise, it has no value and the Bank need not exchange it.

Two new denominations arrived under those rules in 2024. The Bank records the 200 and 500 dollar notes entering circulation on 1 April 2024, and says it chose the substrate technology for security reasons and environmental benefit together, supporting the issue with a public information campaign across eight radio stations, nine television stations and six newspapers in five languages.

Common questions

What is AUD to SRD today?

This page shows the current mid-market AUD→SRD rate with a converter and a 90-day chart. The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint, not a rate you can transact at.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
