The largest country on Earth by a wide margin, Russia sprawls across two continents and eleven time zones - when the sun rises in Kaliningrad, it's already setting in Kamchatka.
It's the largest country in the world, roughly the size of the entire surface of the dwarf planet Pluto.
It spans eleven time zones across one continuous stretch of land, more than any other country's mainland.
Lake Baikal, in Siberia, is the world's deepest and oldest freshwater lake, holding roughly a fifth of all unfrozen fresh water on the planet.
The Trans-Siberian Railway is the longest railway line in the world, running about 9,289 kilometres from Moscow to Vladivostok.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A horizontal tricolour of white, blue and red, in the proportions two to three. Article 70 of the Russian constitution does not describe the flag at all. It delegates the description to a federal constitutional law, and that law, of 25 December 2000, sets out the three bands and assigns the colours no meaning. It fixes no shade either, and the Presidential Executive Office says as much in terms. The colour readings that circulate are popular tradition, and none of them is the state's.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Most Australian financial institutions and transfer providers stopped serving this corridor after 2022, and the major card networks no longer operate inside the country. The ruble still has a published rate; what it does not have is a straightforward way to send one.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Russia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The Faster Payments System launched on 28 January 2019 and entered industrial operation a month later, on 28 February, when banks had to give customers full access to transfers between individuals. It addresses a transfer by mobile telephone number and runs at every hour of every day. The Bank of Russia is its operator and settlement centre, and the national payment card system is its operational and clearing centre. Connection was made compulsory in stages: systemically important banks by 1 September 2019 and banks holding a universal licence by 1 September 2020, together said to cover more than ninety-five per cent of the Russian payment market.
How far that address reaches across a border is a question the Bank declines to answer in full. It proposed cross-border transfers in 2021 by two routes, a foreign bank connecting through a Russian intermediary or an integration between two countries' own instant schemes, and by the end of 2024 thirteen Russian and fifty foreign banks were involved. Asked which countries, an official said in July 2023 that five Russian banks then offered the service to three countries and that, for understandable reasons, the Bank does not name them.
The Bank has named no corridor that includes Australia. Money from there is addressed to an account, not to a telephone.
The money lands in a country where the domestic alternative has become the default. The Bank recorded seven of every ten Russian residents using the telephone-number system by the end of 2024, and put cashless payments at 85.8 per cent of retail turnover in the same year.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Russia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Russia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
