Romania wraps around the Carpathian Mountains in southeastern Europe, home to medieval Transylvania, Dracula's castle legend, and the Danube's vast wildlife-rich delta on the Black Sea.
A vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red, blue at the hoist. Article 12(1) of the constitution gives the three colours and their order from the lance and nothing more, and the flag law adds the proportions and, since 2023, an exact colour specification. Neither instrument assigns the colours a meaning. The colours are conventionally traced to those of the Romanian principalities, and several readings of them circulate, the liberty, justice and fraternity one among them.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Romania redenominated its leu in 2005, cutting four zeros, so any pre-2005 figure encountered online is off by a factor of ten thousand. The currency has since been managed within a fairly tight range against the euro.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. RoPay launched on 14 October 2024 as Romania's first national mobile instant payment service, moving money between accounts by a quick response code, a deep link, a contactless tap, or mobile numbers used as aliases for account numbers. Its own launch announcement sets a condition that rules out a sender in another country: both the payer and the recipient must have their bank's mobile application installed, and the bank must offer the service. Money from Australia therefore arrives the ordinary way, addressed to the recipient's own account number.
The plumbing belongs to an unusual joint venture. Romania's clearing house is TRANSFOND, whose majority shareholder is the National Bank of Romania and whose remaining shareholders are the commercial banks that use it. It administers and operates the automated clearing house for interbank retail payments, in local and foreign currency, national and cross-border, and has run the electronic interbank clearing and settlement in Romania since 2005.
TRANSFOND also launched the country's instant payment service, on 22 April 2019, settling transfers in under ten seconds at any hour of any day. The real-time gross settlement system beside it is managed by the National Bank itself, giving final and irrevocable settlement of high-value urgent payments. The scheme governing RoPay was approved by the National Bank and is managed by TRANSFOND with the Romanian Banking Association, so the regulator, the operator and the industry body are the same three names throughout.
A substantial minority of Romanian adults hold no account at all, which is where every rail above stops mattering. The World Bank's measure put Romanian account ownership at 69 per cent of adults in 2021 and 71 per cent in its 2024 round, against 58 per cent in 2017. A recipient without an account has nowhere for a transfer to land, and European law does not fill the gap: the instant payments regulation works through the euro credit transfer scheme, and the leu is not the euro.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Romania. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
