WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue-white-blue horizontal triband with the national coat of arms centred on the white band. Article 2 of the Ley sobre Características y Uso de los Símbolos Patrios assigns the colours their meanings, and they are not geographic: blue signifies justice and loyalty, white symbolises purity and integrity, and the blue is specified as cobalt. The arms set a chain of five dormant volcanoes of equal height on an isthmus between two seas inside an equilateral triangle, beneath a seven-coloured rainbow and the rays of a liberty cap. The law describes every element of them in construction detail without saying the volcanoes stand for the old Central American union. A constitutional reform published in February 2025 added a second national flag beside this one, the red and black of Sandino and of the Sandinista revolution.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Nicaragua has long managed the córdoba by announcing its rate of adjustment against the US dollar ahead of time rather than leaving the level to the market, giving it an administered path that most floating currencies do not have. Money from relatives working abroad is a major part of household income.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Nicaragua determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
The two channels, and the currencies the payment systems operate in
Nicaragua's central bank publishes where remittance value arrives, and banks have been ahead for years. On its accounting for the first quarter of 2025, commercial banks carried 82.9 per cent of the value and specialised agencies 16.2 per cent. In 2021 the same split was 64.9 to 34.7, the same way round but far closer, so what has happened since is a widening rather than a reversal. Agencies' transaction count has fallen over that period while banks' has risen.
A third channel exists and the Bank counts it too. Money physically carried into the country, which it calls pocket remittances, is estimated from surveys conducted at the Guasaule, El Espino, Las Manos and Peñas Blancas land crossings and at Augusto C. Sandino airport. That a central bank surveys at border posts to estimate money carried by hand is worth knowing about the flow into this country.
The systems that money meets once it is inside are not single-currency. The Banco Central de Nicaragua reports its payment traffic by currency: 38.1 per cent of value across all the systems it runs moved in foreign currency in the last quarter of 2025, its funds transfer service operates in cordobas, dollars and euros, and its cheque clearing house settles in the same three. The regional system connecting the central banks of Central America and the Dominican Republic carries entirely foreign currency, and it runs almost one way, with 3,039 transfers received into Nicaragua against 96 sent from it. One caution about the channel figures above: the most recent remittance report the Bank lists is the one for the first quarter of 2025.
How much Nicaraguan córdoba will I receive in Nicaragua?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Nicaragua can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Nicaragua. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
