About the AUD/NIO rate

The AUD/NIO rate is how many NIO one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/NIO rate history.

The other directions of this rate: the reverse rate, NIO → AUD, is on the receiving Nicaraguan córdoba view, and sending Australian dollars to Nicaragua is covered on the AUD → NIO transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

What Nicaraguan law says has to be paid in cordobas

A clause requiring payment in foreign currency is void in Nicaragua. Article 106 of Ley No. 1232, the law on administration of the monetary and financial system adopted by the National Assembly in December 2024, requires prices, taxes, tariffs, fees, wages, contracts and obligations of any class payable or enforceable in Nicaraguan territory to be expressed and settled in cordobas, and declares null any qualifying or restrictive clause imposing payment, in whole or in part, in metals, foreign coin or currency, or any monetary unit other than the cordoba.

Article 107 then lists what escapes that. Four categories are exempt: operations originating in transactions with abroad and expressed in foreign currency, operations by regulated financial institutions agreed in foreign currency, securities issued in foreign currency, and anything else the Banco Central de Nicaragua authorises.

The device that reconciles the rule with commercial reality sits in the next article. Article 108 permits any contract to include a maintenance-of-value clause under which a cordoba obligation holds its value against a foreign currency, with the cordoba amount adjusted to the later official rate if that rate moves. A Nicaraguan contract can therefore be indexed to a foreign currency while remaining lawfully denominated in cordobas.

The rule reached the card terminal in 2024. Acting on a Consejo Directivo resolution of 28 November 2024, the Banco Central de Nicaragua issued a circular to card issuers, processors, acquiring banks and payment aggregators requiring all payments settled in Nicaragua by credit, debit or any other payment card to be effected in cordobas even where the amount is referenced in a foreign currency. It applies to cards issued by national and foreign issuers alike, and only to transactions within national territory; a card used abroad or with an online merchant not domiciled in the country is charged in the foreign currency.

Article 104 reaches the face of the note. Every cordoba banknote must bear the legend of the Banco Central de Nicaragua, the facsimile signatures of the Bank's President and the Minister of Finance and Public Credit, and the resolution number of the Consejo Directivo that approved that issue.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
