About the AUD/USD rate

The AUD/USD rate is how many USD one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/USD rate history.

Related views of this rate: the reverse rate, USD → AUD, is on the receiving US dollar view, and sending Australian dollars to the United States is covered on the AUD → USD transfer page. Why so much of the world prices in dollars

Every three years the Bank for International Settlements counts the world's foreign-exchange turnover, and the April 2025 survey put the US dollar on one side of 89 per cent of all trades. The euro, second, was on one side of 28.9 per cent and the yen 16.8 per cent. Being in nearly nine trades out of ten is not the same as being nine-tenths of the market, but it is close to being unavoidable in it: two currencies with no American connection are frequently converted through the dollar, because that is where the depth is.

The regime itself is ordinary. The Federal Reserve sets monetary policy for the United States and does not aim at a level for the exchange rate, so the rate is whatever buyers and sellers make of it. Nothing about the way the dollar is managed explains its position. Its position is inherited from the volume of business other people choose to do in it.

The notes travel as widely as the trades. Ruth Judson's study of banknote demand for the Federal Reserve estimates that about 60 per cent of all United States currency, and about 70 per cent of hundred-dollar notes, were held outside the country at the end of 2022, and the paper's range of methods centres on 50 to 60 per cent. That is the reason a US dollar note is often spendable, or at least exchangeable, in a country that has never used one officially. A banknote is the least sophisticated financial instrument there is, and its reach abroad is the plainest evidence of what the currency has become.

Common questions

What is AUD to USD today?

This page shows the current mid-market AUD→USD rate with a converter and a 90-day chart. The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint, not a rate you can transact at.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
