About the AUD/FJD rate

The AUD/FJD rate is how many FJD one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/FJD rate history.

The five currencies behind a Fiji dollar

Five currencies decide what a Fiji dollar is worth, and they have done since the beginning of 1999: the US, Australian and New Zealand dollars, the euro and the Japanese yen. The International Monetary Fund classifies the arrangement as a conventional peg in law and in practice. The weights are based mainly on the value of trade and tourist transactions, and are reviewed annually, so a change in where Fiji's visitors come from eventually changes the formula that prices its money.

The rate is produced. The Reserve Bank of Fiji determines the Fiji dollar's rate against the US dollar, its intervention currency, daily and by reference to the basket, and communicates its buying and selling rates to commercial banks. There is no continuous market setting a price in between, which is why this pair moves in steps rather than in the drift a floating currency shows.

Exchange control is the practical half of the arrangement. The work is done by authorised foreign exchange dealers operating under delegated limits: a dealer may approve a payment up to the limit set for its category, and anything above it needs the Reserve Bank's own approval, which the dealer must sight. Combined with the absence of any offshore market, that is why a Fiji dollar is not something an Australian bank will sell before a trip in the way it sells baht or yen.

Fijian dollars are therefore obtained on arrival and spent locally, and leftover notes are difficult to exchange once you have left the country.
