One of the emptiest countries on Earth, Namibia hands most of its space to the desert, where the world's tallest dunes glow orange and a ghostly gravel plain meets a foggy Atlantic shore.

  • The Namib Desert, which gives the country its name, is considered one of the oldest deserts on Earth.
  • It's among the least densely populated countries in the world, with vast stretches of near-empty land.
  • The dunes at Sossusvlei are among the tallest in the world, some rising over 300 metres.
  • It was the first country in the world to write environmental protection into its constitution.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red diagonal band edged in white runs from lower hoist to upper fly, separating a blue upper triangle from a green lower one, with a gold twelve-rayed sun in the upper hoist. Schedule 6 to the constitution blazons the whole flag in proportions - the white bend a third of the width, the red a quarter, the sun a third of the width in diameter, its rays two fifths of its radius issuing from a blue ring - and assigns none of it a meaning. The government's own reading, published outside the law, gives the blue to the sky, the Atlantic and the importance of rain and water, the red to the Namibian people and their heroism, the green to the country's vegetation and agricultural resources, the white to peace and unity, the sun to life and energy, and the gold of the sun to the warmth and the colour of the plains of the Namib Desert.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

The Namibian dollar is fixed one for one with the South African rand, and the arrangement runs one way only: rand is legal tender in Namibia, while Namibian dollars are not accepted in South Africa. Both work for an account held in Windhoek, but only one of them travels.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Namibia determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/NAD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

What changed on 30 September 2024, and the two-day rule it brought

Namibia changed how money crosses its border on 30 September 2024. On that date the Bank of Namibia's Determination on the Conduct of Electronic Fund Transfers within the National Payment System, known as PSD-9, took effect together with a directive on the speed and charges of Common Monetary Area transactions. The Bank's own guidance states that electronic funds transfer between Namibia and the rest of that area ceased to exist, and that banks within it resolved to enable cross-border payments through the SWIFT network instead.

The same directive put an obligation on the receiving end rather than the sending one. Banks processing cross-border payments must ensure that Namibian recipients receive their funds within two business days when sent from South Africa or another member of the area, which the Bank explains is to ensure that Namibian banks do not unreasonably delay the processing of inward payments to their customers.

Not every Namibian bank does this work. Four institutions provide cross-border payment capability, and they went live with the new channels between 9 and 16 September 2024. Inside the country the money then moves on NamPay, the Bank's electronic funds transfer platform built on ISO 20022, where an interbank credit made between 08:00 and 16:00 can reach the beneficiary's account the same day and anything later is processed on the next business day.

Common questions

How much Namibian dollar will I receive in Namibia?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Namibia can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Namibia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
