Split in two by the South China Sea, Malaysia keeps its cities on the peninsula and its rainforests on Borneo - home to some of the oldest jungle on the planet.
Fourteen alternating red and white horizontal stripes with a blue canton bearing a yellow crescent and fourteen-pointed star, the Jalur Gemilang. The Federal Constitution gives Parliament power over flags and emblems but nowhere describes the national flag or assigns it meanings. The official reading now current gives the fourteen stripes to the thirteen states together with the federal government, the red to bravery, the white to purity, the blue to unity, and the yellow of the crescent and star to the royal colour of the Malay rulers. The fourteen points of the star and the crescent as a sign of Islam are earlier official readings that the current one drops.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.
Malaysia is a common posting for Australian workers and a common origin for students heading the other way, so the ringgit corridor carries salary and tuition money rather than only family support. Ringgit is not freely traded offshore, which shapes where the rate is actually set.

Malaysia has a well-built way of paying somebody without knowing their account number, and it stops at one border. The instant transfer scheme operated by Payments Network Malaysia lets a recipient be reached through a linked identifier: a mobile number, a national identity card number, a passport number for non-citizens, or a business registration number.
One border carries those identifiers, and it is not this one. Bank Negara Malaysia announced the link between that scheme and Singapore's equivalent as a way to make real-time transfers between the two countries using just a mobile number. That is the only such link, so from any other country the identifier is not the route in. What a sender elsewhere needs instead is ordinary and slightly old-fashioned: the recipient's account number and their bank's identifier code. Malaysia does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry, so there is no single string that carries the country, the bank and the account together.
Bank Negara Malaysia describes its own real-time gross settlement system, launched in 1999 and since upgraded to run continuous interbank settlement every day of the year, and records that Payments Network Malaysia transmits the instant transfer scheme's transactions into it for settlement. A recipient sees the credit; the settlement between the two banks is a separate movement happening behind it.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Malaysia. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
