Home to over 130 million people and the ancient pyramids of the Aztecs and Maya, Mexico gave the world chocolate, chillies and the tomato - reshaping kitchens everywhere.
Chocolate, chillies, tomatoes, corn and vanilla were all first cultivated in ancient Mexico.
Mexico City is built on the site of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan, once a city on an island in a lake.
Millions of monarch butterflies migrate here each year to overwinter in its mountain forests.
It has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the Americas.
The Chichen Itza pyramid is engineered so that a serpent of shadow slithers down its steps at the equinox.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three vertical bands of green, white and red from the hoist, in the proportion 4:7, height to length, with the national coat of arms centred on the white stripe at a diameter of three quarters of its width. The arms are a Mexican eagle perched by its left talon on a flowering nopal that grows from a rock rising out of a lake, seizing a curved serpent with its right talon and its beak, closed below by oak and laurel branches joined by a ribbon in the flag's colours. The law that defines the flag assigns the colours no meaning; they are conventionally read as hope, purity and the blood of the country's heroes.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The peso is one of the most heavily traded currencies outside the major economies and changes hands nearly around the clock, so quotes keep moving rather than settling overnight. Working-holiday and study travel makes this a genuinely two-way corridor for Australians instead of a one-way remittance route.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Mexico determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Mexico's central bank publishes something few others do: what actually happens to remittance money at the far end. In its bulletin covering the first quarter of 2026, Banco de México records that 99.0 per cent of remittance income arrived by electronic transfer, and then splits that electronic total by how it was collected.
Of it, 47.3 per cent was taken in cash, worth 6,772 million US dollars, while 52.7 per cent was deposited to an account, worth 7,539 million. Sent electronically and received into a bank account are two different statements in Mexico, and the gap between them is close to even.
If the money is going into an account, the number that identifies it is not an IBAN. Mexico does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry. What is used instead is the standardised bank code, the CLABE, which Banco de México describes as eighteen digits. A recipient may also be identified by a debit card number or by the ten-digit mobile number linked to their account.
The domestic movement runs on the central bank's own system for interbank electronic payments, which Banco de México has administered since August 2004 and which settles transfers between accounts at different financial institutions in the national currency. The system is domestic. An overseas payment is credited by a Mexican bank, which then moves it on those rails.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Mexico can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Mexico. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
