About the AUD/MXN rate

The AUD/MXN rate is how many MXN one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/MXN rate history.

Where else this pair appears: the reverse rate, MXN → AUD, is on the receiving Mexican peso view, and sending Australian dollars to Mexico is covered on the AUD → MXN transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

Why 82 per cent of peso trading happens outside Mexico

Reporting the Bank for International Settlements survey taken in April 2025, Banco de México recorded that 82 per cent of daily peso turnover takes place outside Mexico, unchanged from the previous survey three years earlier. Its own explanation is that transactions involving the peso happen globally and around the clock, under adequate trading and liquidity conditions. The counterpart figure is the striking one: only 0.2 per cent of world foreign exchange turnover physically occurs in Mexico. The market in Mexican money is, in the main, somewhere else.

The Bank publishes where that puts the peso among other currencies, and the answer is less linear than it sounds. Daily global turnover in the peso rose from US$114 billion in 2022 to US$153 billion in 2025, or 1.6 per cent of the world total, making it the fourteenth most-traded currency and the third among developing-country currencies, behind only the Chinese renminbi and the Indian rupee. It was eleventh in 2016, on a larger share than it holds now, so the ranking has moved in both directions.

One caution comes from the Bank itself. The April 2025 survey coincided with heightened volatility and a surge in trading activity that followed trade policy announcements early that month, which flatters the comparison with 2022.

The float underneath all of this was not adopted in calm conditions. Banco de México's own account is that since the free-floating regime was taken up as a consequence of the balance of payments crisis of 1994 and 1995, the exchange rate ceased to be the policy instrument anchoring inflation expectations, and monetary policy became what it calls the economy's nominal anchor instead.

Carrying the notes is a matter of declaring them. Mexico's customs agency requires travellers entering or leaving with US$10,000 or the equivalent, in cash or negotiable instruments, to declare it, with a fine of 20 to 40 per cent charged on the excess and a term of imprisonment where an undeclared amount exceeds US$30,000.
