A red field bearing a golden sun with eight broadening rays that extend to the flag's edges. Article 5 of the constitution provides that the flag is adopted by law on a two-thirds majority of the Assembly, and says nothing about its meaning. The design dates from 1995, and the sun is conventionally read as the new sun of liberty of the national anthem.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

North Macedonia holds the denar at a de facto fixed rate against the euro, a policy it has maintained for a long time. The practical effect is that this pair moves when the Australian dollar and the euro move, and rarely otherwise.

North Macedonia's permission to receive money from abroad is older than the systems carrying it. Under the Law on Foreign Exchange Operations, in the text the country filed on joining the World Trade Organization, residents may keep foreign means of payment in foreign currency accounts or foreign currency deposits with banks authorised in the country, and the National Bank defines how such accounts are opened. The same law defines a personal transfer of funds to include money moving into the country on family loans, gifts, dowries, inheritances and legacies. It then provides that residents and non-residents are free to execute such transfers into and out of the country unless the law says otherwise. Money sent by a relative in Australia is exactly that category.
The infrastructure around that permission has been rebuilt, and the law governing it more than once. The Macedonian Interbank Payment System, which settles large-value and urgent denar payments in real time on a gross basis, began operating in July 2001, and the National Bank is its owner and operator; retail payments are netted separately by the clearing house in Skopje. The legal framework is what has moved recently. The Law on Payment Services and Payment Systems has been amended three times since it first appeared in 2022. The Bank now collects payment statistics not only from banks and savings houses but from payment institutions, electronic money institutions and payment system operators, which is what opening the market beyond banks looks like in practice.
The European steps are recent and are not the same step. North Macedonia entered the geographical scope of the single euro payments area in March 2025 alongside Moldova, four months after Albania and Montenegro, the first enlargement partners to take part. Separately, the country's central bank signed a letter of intent on 15 October 2025 to join an instant payment platform developed by the Bank of Italy as a clone of its own instant settlement infrastructure, alongside Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Montenegro.
