What North Macedonia's remittance number leaves out

North Macedonia's recorded remittance figure is unremarkable, and probably wrong. World Bank figures put personal remittances received by North Macedonia at 2.70 per cent of gross domestic product in 2024. The International Monetary Fund, reporting in April 2025, adds that the figures for North Macedonia may significantly underestimate these inflows, and that central bank calculations suggest they could be three times higher than reported, at around 14 per cent. The gap between those two numbers is larger than most countries' entire remittance flow.

Behind it is an emigration that is both large and old. Australia's own census counted 41,786 residents born in North Macedonia in 2021, with a median age of 62, and 89.6 per cent of them reporting Macedonian ancestry. More than half arrived in two decades: 26.1 per cent between 1961 and 1970, and 27.8 per cent between 1971 and 1980. The outflow has not stopped since, and the 2021 census in North Macedonia revised the country's population down by around 11 per cent.

The recorded series is not stable either. On the World Bank's figures it reached 3.80 per cent of gross domestic product in 2020 and had fallen to 2.45 per cent by 2025, so the measured figure moves considerably while the underlying flow is thought to be several times larger than any of those readings.

Money arriving from abroad in someone else's currency shapes what people hold at home. Around 40 per cent of both deposits and loans in North Macedonia are in foreign currency, despite an explicit strategy to encourage denar use, which is a large part of why the Fund classifies the country as maintaining a stabilised arrangement with a de facto peg to the euro and price stability as its primary objective, with only limited scope to deviate from the European Central Bank's rate cycle.
