About the AUD/BYN rate

The AUD/BYN rate is how many BYN one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/BYN rate history.

Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, BYN → AUD, is on the receiving Belarusian ruble view, and sending Australian dollars to Belarus is covered on the AUD → BYN transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

Belarus has redenominated three times

Three separate legal instruments have cut zeros off the Belarusian rouble, and each names its own ratio. A joint resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers and the National Bank dated 12 August 1994 ordered a tenfold redenomination as at 20 August that year. Presidential Decree No. 613 of 19 October 1999 ordered the next, from 1 January 2000, at one thousand old roubles to one new. Presidential Decree No. 450 of 4 November 2015 ordered the third, effective 1 July 2016, at ten thousand to one.

Multiplied through, that is a factor of one hundred million between the earliest of those roubles and the present one. Eight zeros have come off a currency that has never changed its name.

The last changeover was run over an unusually long tail. The 2000-series and 2009-series money circulated in parallel from 1 July to 31 December 2016. Free exchange of the older notes then ran to the end of 2021, and a further window opened under a decree of August 2022 and closed on 31 December 2024, after which the old series stopped being exchangeable at all. Eight years passed between the redenomination and the point at which the previous money finally became worthless.

The notes that replaced them carry a date that gives away how long the plan had been sitting ready. The 2016 decree exchanged money of the 2000 series for money of the 2009 series, so the replacement notes had been designed and dated seven years before anyone was allowed to spend them.

The 2016 series also changed the physical shape of the money. The official information material issued at the time lists seven banknote denominations and eight coin denominations, in a country where low-value banknotes had until then been doing the work coins do elsewhere.
