A landlocked country tucked between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is wine country to its core - it holds the largest underground wine cellars on Earth.
A vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red with the national coat of arms on the central yellow stripe. Article 12 blazons the arms in full: an eagle holding a golden cross in its beak, a green olive branch in its right claw and a golden sceptre in its left, with a shield on its breast divided red over blue and charged with an aurochs head, an eight-pointed star between its horns, a five-petalled rose to the right and a crescent to the left, all of it in gold. It assigns none of it a meaning. The tricolour is conventionally read as reflecting the shared heritage of Moldova and Romania.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Moldova is one of Europe’s most remittance-reliant economies, with a large share of working-age citizens employed abroad. Note the name it shares with Romania’s currency: a leu figure means nothing without knowing which country is meant.

The National Bank of Moldova publishes which channel money from abroad actually travels on. In calendar 2020, the latest year for which the National Bank publishes the full split, transfers from abroad in favour of individuals through Moldovan banks came to 1,486.74 million United States dollars. Rapid money transfer systems carried 83.2 per cent of that and gross bank transfers the remaining 16.8 per cent. The leading origins were Israel, Italy and Russia, and the top seven countries together accounted for 93.5 per cent.
What the National Bank has built since is domestic. It launched an instant payments system for individuals on 12 March 2024 and opened it to businesses on 31 July that year. A payment between two people on it is addressed by the telephone number registered with the recipient's bank, and is executed within fifteen seconds; a business is paid to its account number, with the funds available in ten. Companies can send and receive at any hour of any day. Underneath sits the automated interbank system, which the Bank describes as a real-time gross settlement component for large-value and urgent payments and a designated-time net settlement component for low-value ones.
Joining the European schemes and being able to use them carry two different dates here, seven months apart. The European Payments Council approved Moldova's inclusion in the geographical scope on 6 March 2025, and eight Moldovan commercial banks held participant status by the day the country became an operational part of the area, on 6 October 2025.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
