The world's largest landlocked country, Kazakhstan sprawls across the steppe from Europe into Asia and launches the world's rockets from the plains of Baikonur.
A sky-blue field with a golden sun and its rays at the centre, a soaring golden eagle beneath it, and a vertical band of golden national ornament at the hoist. Article 1 of the Constitutional Law on State Symbols prescribes exactly that: it fixes the field as sky blue, the sun, rays, eagle and ornament as gold and the ratio of width to length at one to two. It gives none of them a meaning, counts no rays and names neither the eagle's species nor the ornament's pattern. A later article sends every flag, whatever its size, to a national technical standard, which dimensions the eagle and the ornament. The readings of the blue as sky and unity, the sun as life and abundance and the eagle as freedom and power are published by state bodies rather than fixed by the law.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

The tenge floats and its value has historically tracked oil and the Russian ruble more closely than anything happening in Australia. Amounts convert into the hundreds of tenge per Australian dollar, so quoted figures run long.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Kazakhstan determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Kazakhstan numbers the person before it numbers the account. The law on the national registers of identification numbers, of 12 January 2007, gives every individual a unique number and lists where it must be used, two of those uses being payments and transfers of money and the opening of bank accounts. The same article turns that into a duty on the bank, which must take the number into account and control the correctness of its indication against the algorithm producing its check digit. Foreigners and stateless persons are written out of both uses, and their number is formed only on Kazakh territory and only on personal contact with a registration office.
The account is a second assigned code. Under the National Bank's rules for opening, managing and closing customer bank accounts, a bank assigns an individual identification code, and that code is the account number. It runs to twenty characters: the country code, two control digits, a three-digit bank code the National Bank issues, and thirteen the bank fills itself. Closing the account cancels the code.
Those thirteen may be letters as well as digits, with three exceptions the rules name: I, Q and O are not used. Where letters do appear the check digit is worked out through a table that turns each into digits, and the check is the Modulus 97-10 standard. Move the first four characters to the end, divide by ninety-seven, subtract the remainder from ninety-eight. A number typed wrongly fails that sum before it reaches a payment system.
The number carries an appearance the rules do not support. The National Bank's own worked example prints KZ75 125K ZT20 6910 0100 and the international register's KZ86125KZT5004100100, both carrying the currency's three letters inside the account. The rules put those characters at the discretion of the bank, so what the examples show is a convention several banks share and not a meaning anybody assigned.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Kazakhstan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
