An East African crossroads where the Great Rift Valley splits the land and the savannah stages one of nature's greatest shows, the wildebeest migration across the Maasai Mara.

  • The Maasai Mara hosts the Great Migration, when millions of wildebeest and zebra thunder across the plains.
  • The Great Rift Valley, visible from space, runs right through the country.
  • Kenyan runners are among the greatest distance athletes in the world.
  • Some of the oldest human fossils ever found were unearthed near Kenya's Lake Turkana.
  • The equator runs directly through the country, yet Nairobi stays mild thanks to its high altitude.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

Black, red and green horizontal bands separated by thin white stripes, with a Maasai shield and two crossed spears at the centre, conventionally described as black, red and white. The National Flag, Emblems and Names Act declares the flag by a design and a description: the drawing carries the 2:3 ratio and the band widths, the thirty-word description gives neither, and neither assigns a meaning. The black is conventionally read for the people, the red for the blood shed for freedom, the green for the land and the white for peace, with the shield and spears for the defence of all of them.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Kenya moved money onto phones earlier and more completely than almost anywhere else, and a large share of arriving funds finish in a mobile wallet rather than at a bank counter. That changes what the sender needs at hand: the recipient’s registered number, and a wallet able to accept the payment size.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Kenya determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/KES converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Licensed to pay out, not to hold

Kenya's Money Remittance Regulations give a licensed operator a job and then narrow it sharply. One regulation states that such an operator shall deal in inbound and outbound international money transfer transactions. The next one bars the same operator from deposit-taking, from maintaining current accounts for customers, and from acting as custodian of funds. The effect is structural: money arriving through that channel cannot sit with the operator, so it has to keep moving, either out to the recipient or on to a bank. The regulations also require that all foreign exchange inflows and outflows of these operators be received through commercial banks, documented, and advised to the Central Bank in the prescribed format.

Down at the level of a single transaction, the regulations require the application form to carry the customer's national identity card or passport number, and for a refugee an alien card, refugee card or United Nations card. Alongside that go the address, telephone number and nationality, the amount and currency to be remitted or received, the purpose of the remittance and the source of funds. The receipt has to show the customer's full names and identity or passport number as well.

Behind all of this the Central Bank of Kenya runs the country's real-time gross settlement mechanism itself, implemented in July 2005 and, in the Bank's words, wholly owned and managed by it, settling transactions individually and continuously in participants' accounts. Kenya does not appear among the ISO 13616 formats in the IBAN registry.

Common questions

How much Kenyan shilling will I receive in Kenya?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Kenya can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Kenya. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
