About the AUD/KES rate

The AUD/KES rate is how many KES one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/KES rate history.

Where else this pair appears: the reverse rate, KES → AUD, is on the receiving Kenyan shilling view, and sending Australian dollars to Kenya is covered on the AUD → KES transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

Where Kenyan shillings actually sit

The Central Bank of Kenya publishes a monthly count of registered mobile money accounts, and in June 2026 it stood at 94.2 million - comfortably more accounts than Kenya has people, since one person may hold several. The Bank counts 572,104 active agents serving them, and in that single month those agents handled 212.45 million cash-in and cash-out transactions worth KES 682.46 billion. A shilling in Kenya is more likely to be a balance than a banknote.

Money arriving from abroad lands in the same system, and the Bank publishes that by origin as well. Of the US$436.58 million in diaspora remittances it recorded for July 2026, US$225.09 million came from North America, US$89.08 million from Europe, and US$122.40 million from the rest of the world, Australia included.

The rate itself is not set by anyone. The Bank's own Guidelines on Foreign Exchange record that responsibility for foreign exchange business passed to authorised dealers when the Exchange Control Act was repealed with effect from 27 December 1995, and describe the result as a liberalised foreign exchange market. The rates the Bank publishes are explicitly indicative: it states they are the average buying and selling rates of the major market participants at the open of trade each day.

Carrying notes across the border is a declaration matter rather than a permission one. The Bank's Guidelines set out Legal Notice No. 118 of 1998, under which a person entering or leaving Kenya may carry up to five hundred thousand shillings, or the equivalent of five thousand US dollars in foreign currency, and may still move more than that provided it is declared on the Bank's own form at entry or exit.

Common questions

What is AUD to KES today?

This page shows the current mid-market AUD→KES rate with a converter and a 90-day chart. The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint, not a rate you can transact at.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
