About the AUD/LSL rate
The AUD/LSL rate is how many LSL one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/LSL rate history.
Where else this pair appears: the reverse rate, LSL → AUD, is on the receiving Lesotho loti view, and sending Australian dollars to Lesotho is covered on the AUD → LSL transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.
What stands behind a loti note
Every loti note and coin in issue must be covered in full. Section 23 of the Central Bank of Lesotho Act 2000 gives the Central Bank of Lesotho the sole right to issue, and then requires that what it issues be backed one hundred per cent by gold coin, gold bullion, silver coin, silver bullion, rand or convertible foreign exchange. Those six assets are the whole of the permitted cover, and the section states the figure as one hundred per cent.
The Bank's audited accounts show what that obligation covers. At the end of 2023 it reported notes and coins issued of just under M2.4 billion, of which coin accounted for about M34 million, so the backing requirement is overwhelmingly a claim about paper.
Coin is also where the loti stops being unlimited money. Under section 27 notes are legal tender at face value for any amount, while coins that have not been tampered with are legal tender only up to twenty maloti. A creditor in Lesotho may decline a larger payment in coin and be within the statute.
There is one thing the Bank owes anyone who asks. Section 24 requires it to exchange Lesotho currency of any denomination for notes and coins of any other denomination, on demand and without charge, at its principal place of business in Maseru. The Bank lists five circulating note denominations, from ten maloti to two hundred, so that obligation runs across the whole of the paper it issues.
