About the AUD/MAD rate

A band that has been widened twice and never narrowed
Morocco is moving towards a floating currency in visible increments, and each one is dated. Bank Al-Maghrib holds the dirham against a basket weighted 60 per cent to the euro and 40 per cent to the US dollar, weights set on 13 April 2015 in place of an earlier 80-20 split. The rate moves inside a band around a central value, and that band has been widened twice and never narrowed: from a quarter of a per cent either side to two and a half per cent on 15 January 2018, and from two and a half to five per cent on 9 March 2020. The Bank's own reform pages record those two phases and no third.
There is a second band that most descriptions miss. Quotations for foreign banknotes sit inside a wider one, taken from five per cent to seven and a half at the same time as the main band's second widening - so the dirham has two official tolerances at once, depending on whether the transaction is a transfer or a handful of notes.
The notes are the constrained part. The Office des Changes states that importing and exporting dirham banknotes is prohibited, with a single exception: a traveller may carry no more than 2,000 dirhams in or out. That is a small allowance by any standard, and it is why the dirham is obtained on arrival in Morocco.
Two invisible earnings carry a large share of the external account. On the Office des Changes' provisional figures for January to July 2026, travel receipts came to 79,009 million dirhams and transfers from Moroccans living abroad to 74,788 million, against a goods trade deficit of 244,696 million.
