About the AUD/MZN rate
The AUD/MZN rate is how many MZN one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/MZN rate history.
Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, MZN → AUD, is on the receiving Mozambican metical view, and sending Australian dollars to Mozambique is covered on the AUD → MZN transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.
What Mozambique requires of foreign earnings
Thirty per cent of what a Mozambican exporter earns abroad is converted into meticais at the moment it is received. Aviso n.º 5/GBM/2024, signed by the Governor of the Banco de Mocambique and published in the Boletim da Republica of 21 March 2024, requires residents to repatriate receipts from exports of goods, services and foreign investment income within ninety days, by bank transfer in foreign currency to a bank authorised to operate in Mozambique, and then converts that share at the prevailing spot rate on receipt.
Two carve-outs are written into the same article: rent paid by non-residents for residents' property in Mozambique where it goes into an account in the national banking system, and remuneration under employment or services rendered by residents to embassies and diplomatic or consular representations in Mozambique.
Aviso n.º 4/GBM/2024, signed the same day, lists capital operations that no longer need the Bank's authorisation at all: foreign direct investment, real-estate investment, trade-linked credits, and investment abroad up to the equivalent of one million United States dollars in a calendar year. It also permits residents with a proven external relationship, such as exporters and staff of diplomatic representations, to open foreign-currency accounts in Mozambique.
Buying foreign cash over the counter is capped, purpose-limited and age-limited. Article 12 of Aviso n.º 3/GBM/2024 confines a casa de câmbio to buying and selling foreign currency with natural persons, and provides that a sale is destined exclusively for travel abroad and limited to the equivalent of ten thousand United States dollars per individual aged not less than eighteen.
All of it sits under a statute that is newer than most references to it, and the chain below the statute is where the stale figures come from. Both 2024 avisos take their authority from Lei n.º 28/2022 de 29 de Dezembro, the Lei Cambial, which replaced the 2009 law of the same name. The regulation beneath it is Decreto n.º 56/2023 de 3 de Outubro, which revoked Decreto n.º 49/2017, which had itself revoked the 2010 Regulamento da Lei Cambial. A counter cap of five thousand dollars is commonly attributed to that 2010 decree, and it has been off the books through two replacements.
