A desert kingdom guarding one of the ancient world's great wonders, Jordan carved the rose-red city of Petra straight into its sandstone cliffs.
Horizontal bands of black, white and green with a red triangle at the hoist bearing a white seven-pointed star. Article 4 of the constitution prescribes the geometry in detail - the triangle's height at half the flag's length, the star fitting a circle one fourteenth of the flag's length in diameter - and assigns none of it a meaning. The state reads the bands for the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid caliphates, the red for the banner the Hashemites have carried since the 1500s, and the star's seven points, most often, for the seven verses of the opening sura of the Quran. The whole design is taken from the flag of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

Jordan has held its dinar steady against the US dollar since the mid-1990s, which gives this corridor unusually predictable behaviour for the region. The dinar is worth more than an Australian dollar and divides into 1000 fils.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. Jordan gives the person being paid a step of their own, and writes it into the rules. The Central Bank's regulatory framework for providing cross-border remittance services electronically, published in October 2020, sets out what happens once an inbound transfer is approved: the beneficiary is notified that a transfer is waiting, and is then asked to prove their connection to it. They enter the unique reference number of the transfer request, which the framework says they obtained from the sender. They state the relationship between themselves and the sender. And they declare that they are the beneficial owner of the money.
The reference number is the part that reaches back across the world. It is generated where the transfer starts, so the person in Australia has to pass it on, and the framework treats it as a required field on the instruction throughout. Where the money is going to a mobile wallet the sender is also asked to say so up front, and to give the wallet's mobile number and the name of the provider alongside the beneficiary's own name. The alternative route runs through a licensed exchange company, and using its portal or app to collect a transfer requires one prior visit in person so the company can complete its identification checks.
None of that is the domestic rail, which is a separate thing and stops at the border. Jordan's instant payment system, launched in 2020 and operated by the country's payments company, moves money between bank accounts and mobile wallets in seconds, lets a payer register an alias in place of an account number, and shows them the recipient's full name before the transfer completes. Its own operator states the limit plainly: transfers inside Jordan, in Jordanian dinars only.

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Jordan. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between global buy and sell prices, and no retail provider deals at it. The gap between it and a quote is the provider’s margin, which is usually where most of the cost of a transfer sits. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
