About the AUD/JOD rate

The AUD/JOD rate is how many JOD one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/JOD rate history.

Reading the same rate from the other side: the reverse rate, JOD → AUD, is on the receiving Jordanian dinar view, and sending Australian dollars to Jordan is covered on the AUD → JOD transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

How the dinar came to circulate outside Jordan

Jordan's central bank calls its fixed rate against the US dollar the nominal pillar of monetary policy, and dates the system's adoption to 1995. The International Monetary Fund's January 2024 assessment was that the peg continues to serve Jordan well, providing stability and low inflation.

The dinar's second life is next door, and it rests on an unusual piece of drafting. The Protocol on Economic Relations signed in Paris on 29 April 1994, which became Annex IV of the Gaza and Jericho agreement, establishes a Palestine Monetary Authority with most central banking functions: official economic and financial adviser, sole financial agent, holder of the foreign exchange reserves, lender of last resort for the banking system, and the authority licensing foreign exchange dealers. Note issue is not among them.

On currency the Protocol names exactly one. The new Israeli shekel, it says, will be one of the circulating currencies in the areas and will legally serve there as means of payment for all purposes including official transactions, and any circulating currency, including the shekel, will be accepted when offered as a means of payment for any transaction. A Palestinian currency was left to further discussion, which in practice is a veto. The dinar's status there flows from that open phrase, "any circulating currency". It is nowhere designated by name.

The result is visible in what the Palestine Monetary Authority publishes: indicative rates for the dinar alongside the dollar, the euro and the Egyptian pound, all quoted against the shekel. The Protocol also required banks in the areas to convert shekels into other circulating currencies and back, which is the mechanism that keeps a multi-currency economy working day to day.

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
