Cradled between the Tigris and Euphrates, Iraq sits on the ancient land of Mesopotamia, where writing, the wheel and the first cities were arguably invented.
Mesopotamia, largely within modern Iraq, is often called the birthplace of civilisation.
The earliest known writing system, cuneiform, was developed here by the Sumerians.
The ancient city of Babylon, with its legendary hanging gardens, stood near modern Baghdad.
The Code of Hammurabi, one of the oldest written legal codes, originated in this region.
Baghdad was a leading centre of learning and science during the medieval Islamic Golden Age.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Three horizontal bands of red, white and black, with the green Takbir, 'Allahu Akbar' ('God is great'), written across the centre of the white band in Kufic script. The flag law reads the colours as those of the Islamic banners. That wording replaced a reading of them as the colours of the Arab banners in 2008, in the same clause that deleted the three green stars.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Iraq’s dinar trades in large numbers and the country runs a currency auction that keeps the official rate distinct from what is available on the street. The dinar has also been a long-running target of speculative sales pitches abroad, which is worth knowing before acting on anything read elsewhere.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Iraq determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Ninety-five banks, and some bodies that are not banks
The Central Bank of Iraq owns the rail its payments settle on, and it says so in the same breath as describing it. Its account of the Iraqi payment system names six components, and puts the real-time gross settlement system at the centre: it organises transfers between banks' head offices and the Bank and its branches, and it settles the other systems, the clearing house and the retail infrastructure among them. The Bank installs the software at each participant's site, trains the banks' users, and supplies the authorisations needed to operate the system exclusively itself. Operation is guarded by a four-eyes rule.
The participant list runs wider than the banking sector. The system opened in Baghdad on 24 August 2006 with five banks settling among themselves, and now runs to 95 banks together with every licensed branch of a foreign bank. Alongside them the Bank lists participants that are not banks at all: the Ministry of Finance, the National Pension Authority, the department that administers minors' affairs, and electronic payment companies. It has run around the clock since 2 June 2024.
Where money is handed over in cash, the licence decides what is possible. The Bank's 2022 controls on exchange and intermediation businesses turn on graded categories, and reserve external transfers through an international remittance system to companies in categories A and B. The Bank publishes the register of who holds what, and circulates the changes: on 6 July 2026 it announced the withdrawal of three companies' licences to intermediate in buying and selling foreign currency. A shopfront's category, and whether it still holds one, are published facts.
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Iraq can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Iraq. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
