A Central American country of pine-covered mountains and Caribbean reef, Honduras guards the ancient Maya city of Copan and a stretch of the world's second-largest barrier reef just off its northern shore.
The ancient Maya city of Copan is famous for its intricately carved stone monuments and hieroglyphic stairway.
Its Bay Islands sit on the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.
The Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve protects one of Central America's largest remaining rainforests.
Honduras was one of the first places Christopher Columbus reached on the American mainland, in 1502.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
Two blue horizontal bands framing a white one, with five blue five-pointed stars in the centre, four of them set as a rectangle parallel to the bands and the fifth at its centre. Article 7 of the constitution names the flag as a national symbol and leaves its characteristics to ordinary law, assigning it no meaning itself, and the decree that fixes the design assigns none either. The five stars are conventionally read as the five states of the former United Provinces of Central America and the ideal of Central American union, the blue as the sky and the white as peace.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
The lempira is not left to the market: Honduras adjusts it against the US dollar in small administered steps instead of letting it float, so daily variation in this pair comes almost entirely from the Australian side. Transfers from abroad make up a large share of household income across the country.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Honduras determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Honduras measures where its remittances end up. Twice a year the Banco Central de Honduras surveys people sending money home and asks, among other things, about the point of collection. In the January 2026 edition, ninety per cent of the transfers described were collected at a bank or a credit union, three and a half per cent at a department store, and two point three per cent were deposited into a bank account. Collection at a bank or cooperative exceeds deposit into a bank account by roughly forty to one. The survey rests on eight hundred and sixty-five interviews conducted between the fifth and thirteenth of January, 703 of them with Honduran emigrants at the Palmerola and Ramon Villeda Morales international airports before boarding and 162 by telephone through the foreign ministry call centre.
The same survey says something about the form the money is in when it starts, which helps explain the shape of the answer: 65.5 per cent of those senders fund the transfer with cash.
What has changed recently is the identifier. Honduras joined the ISO 13616 registry in October 2024, the newest of the registered entries across Central America and the Caribbean, so there is now a twenty-eight character international account number to quote where a few years ago there was none. That matters mostly for the small share of transfers going to an account. Behind them sits a real-time gross settlement system the central bank has operated since March 2013, settling individually and without netting, and it is the system in which the country's other payment systems settle.
How much Honduran lempira will I receive in Honduras?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Honduras can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Honduras. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
