About the AUD/HNL rate

The AUD/HNL rate is how many HNL one Australian dollar buys. It moves constantly with interest-rate expectations, commodity prices and global risk sentiment - see what moves the rate. Tradergy shows the mid-market reference rate and does not forecast where it’s heading. For the 52-week highs and lows and a daily table, see the AUD/HNL rate history.

The other directions of this rate: the reverse rate, HNL → AUD, is on the receiving Honduran lempira view, and sending Australian dollars to Honduras is covered on the AUD → HNL transfer page. Every AUD pair sits on the convert hub, and to work in more than one currency at once there is the currency converter.

How foreign currency is actually bought in Honduras

Foreign currency in Honduras is bought in a one-hour window each morning. The Banco Central de Honduras runs the auction on SENDI, its own electronic foreign exchange trading system, and publishes the terms: bids are received between 09:45 and 10:45, and the minimum participation is ten thousand United States dollars. A private party bids through an exchange agent, because the 2018 regulation that established the market confines trading to the Bank and the institutions its Directorio authorises as agents; anyone may hold foreign-currency assets, but the moment of trading them is channelled.

The caps are set by participant type. A natural person may make up to three requests totalling one hundred thousand dollars a day; a legal person up to three totalling one million two hundred thousand; an exchange agent one request of up to one and a half million for its own needs and one of up to two million to serve clients whose requirements fall below the ten-thousand floor.

The reference rate is an output of that process. The regulation that established the organised market in 2018, since amended, defines the Tipo de Cambio de Referencia as the price resulting from the bids awarded in the last auction event, requires the Bank to send it to agents daily and publish it, and requires agents to display their buying and selling prices visibly to the public. Bids submitted before close and authorised by electronic signature are binding and irrevocable, and entitle the Bank to debit the agents' deposit accounts.

What an agent buys largely passes through it. Under the same 2018 instrument, agents sell to the Bank the proportion of client purchases its Board sets, no later than the next business day, and foreign currency acquired against remittances paid out in lempiras goes to the Bank on the same timetable. Where a beneficiary elects to receive a remittance in foreign currency, it must be credited to a foreign-currency account in that person's name rather than handed over as cash.

Common questions

What is AUD to HNL today?

This page shows the current mid-market AUD→HNL rate with a converter and a 90-day chart. The mid-market rate is a reference midpoint, not a rate you can transact at.

Will I get the mid-market rate?

No. Banks and transfer services add a margin, so the rate you’re offered will be a little worse than the mid-market rate shown here.
