An archipelago of some 300-plus Pacific islands where rugby is close to a religion and the welcome is genuinely warm. Fiji is the postcard that other tropical islands are jealous of.

  • It's made up of more than 300 islands, though only around a third are inhabited.
  • Rugby sevens is the national obsession, and Fiji won Olympic gold in the sport's debut in 2016.
  • The 180th meridian passes through it, placing it among the first places on Earth to greet each new day.
  • Traditional kava, a drink made from a pepper plant root, is central to its social ceremonies.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A light-blue field with the Union Jack in the canton and the shield from Fiji's coat of arms in the fly. The shield is white, divided by a red Cross of Saint George, with sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace holding an olive branch and a bunch of bananas in its quarters, beneath a golden lion holding a cocoa pod. No Fijian law assigns the colours a meaning: the 2013 Constitution does not mention the flag, and the National Flag Protection Act 2015 describes no design. The designer, Tessa Mackenzie, said she chose the pale blue to represent the sea.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Fiji sets its dollar against a basket of currencies rather than a single one, and the Australian dollar carries the largest weight in that basket, which holds this pair inside a narrower band than most. Holiday spending and family transfers both feed the corridor, so it runs in both directions.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Fiji determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/FJD converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Controlled on the way out

The Reserve Bank of Fiji administers exchange control under the Exchange Control Act, delegating limits to authorised foreign exchange dealers and taking anything beyond those limits for its own approval. Its Exchange Control Guidelines effective 1 January 2026 are in substance a schedule of outward payment categories, each with a delegated limit and its documentary requirements. The document carries no inward counterpart, so the control bears on money leaving Fiji.

A large share of what arrives now lands in a wallet. The Reserve Bank reported in April 2026 that there were 957,816 registered electronic money users at December 2025, of whom 722,340 were active, and that inward remittances arriving through mobile money reached 742.3 million Fijian dollars over the year, drawn mainly from Australia, the United States, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Payment service providers have been licensed by activity since the National Payment System Act 2021 took effect on 30 September 2022, cross-border money transfer being one of the licensable activities, with commercial banks and restricted foreign exchange dealers exempt under their own statutes. Between banks, settlement runs through FIJICLEAR.

What a recipient may then do with it is where the control does bite. The same 2026 guidelines suspend offshore investment for individuals, and the Reserve Bank defines that category to include opening an offshore bank account or foreign currency account and holding an offshore digital wallet, so money that has arrived in Fiji is expected to stay there.

Common questions

How much Fijian dollar will I receive in Fiji?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Fiji can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Fiji. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
