Receiving Australian dollars in the European Union

The euro is the shared currency of the euro-area group of European Union member states, managed by the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. It is the world’s second-most-traded currency after the US dollar, so one AUD→EUR transfer works identically whether the recipient banks in Dublin, Berlin, Madrid or Amsterdam.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

One transfer covers a lot of ground here: the euro is the shared currency of the euro-area countries, so an AUD→EUR transfer works the same whether the recipient banks in Ireland, Germany, Spain or the Netherlands. SEPA covers the destination leg once money is in euros, which is why the euro-area recipient’s bank rarely charges to receive it, and the whole cost of the corridor sits in the conversion the sender pays for.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the European Union determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/EUR converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

The leg the name check runs on

Since 9 October 2025 a payment service provider in the euro area has been obliged to check a payee's name against the IBAN before a credit transfer is made, and to report back match, close match, no match, or that it cannot tell. The European Central Bank set out the obligation and its calendar under the Instant Payments Regulation, with providers outside the euro area following on 9 July 2027 and electronic money institutions and payment institutions in April 2027.

That check runs on the euro leg. It is performed by the provider sending the SEPA payment, which means it guards the domestic hop into a euro-area account and has nothing to say about an instruction given in Australia.

The account detail is the IBAN by itself. The Deutsche Bundesbank records that from 1 February 2016 credit transfers are no longer processed unless they bear an IBAN, and that inside the European Economic Area a provider derives the bank identifier from the number, so no separate code is needed. The relief ends at the Area's edge: a SEPA payment to a country in the scheme but outside the Economic Area still requires the identifier alongside the number. Underneath, instant euro payments settle on the Eurosystem's own platform, TARGET Instant Payment Settlement, in central bank money around the clock, so a payee whose provider has met the January 2025 obligation can be reached at any hour of any day.

Common questions

How much euro will I receive in the European Union?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the European Union can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the European Union. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

Retail rates are set away from the mid-market midpoint by a margin the provider keeps. Comparing a quote against the reference rate on this page is what makes that margin visible, since it is rarely stated as a fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
