Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the Dominican Republic is where the Americas' oldest European city sits a short drive from towering peaks. Baseball, merengue and Santo Domingo's old stone streets set the tempo.
Santo Domingo was the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, founded in 1496.
Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the entire Caribbean.
It has produced a remarkable number of Major League Baseball stars for its size, with the sport treated almost as a national religion.
It shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, the only Caribbean island split between two independent countries.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A white cross dividing the flag into alternating quarters of ultramarine blue and vermilion red, blue at the top of the hoist, with the coat of arms at the centre showing a Bible open at John 8:32. Article 31 describes the design and gives the colours no meaning; the familiar readings come from government pages, which disagree. Without the arms it is the merchant flag.
A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.
It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
It has more kangaroos than people.
WHAT THE FLAG MEANS
A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor
Money sent home is one of the Dominican Republic’s largest sources of foreign currency, alongside tourism, and the flow is constant enough that the receiving side is well set up for small regular payments. The peso has drifted gradually against the US dollar over many years rather than moving in jumps.
The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in the Dominican Republic determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.
Where the payout rate comes from, and what the counter must show you
There is a rule in Dominican exchange regulation that decides what a recipient is handed. Remittance operations may be delivered in national or foreign currency; where they are delivered in national currency, the amount must be reported as a purchase of foreign exchange and the rate used is the one agreed in the country the remittance originated from.
Two obligations put on the counter itself are worth using. A business holding the licence for this work, the agente de remesas y cambio, must permanently display a sign both outside and inside its premises and must display inside, where customers can see it, the registration certificate the Superintendencia de Bancos issued accrediting it. The phrase agente de remesas y cambio must also form part of the company's registered name in Spanish. A person collecting money can check the place they are standing in against the wall behind the counter.
The person handing the notes over need not be the licensee at all. The same regulation defines a sub-agent as a natural or legal person contracted by a financial intermediation entity, an exchange agent or a remittance and exchange agent to carry out exchange operations and the receipt and payment of remittances on their account. The Dominican Republic does appear in the ISO 13616 registry, with a twenty-eight character account number in place since December 2010, so a sender has an international account number to work with.
How much Dominican peso will I receive in the Dominican Republic?
A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in the Dominican Republic can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.
The sender asked for my details - what will they need?
Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in the Dominican Republic. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.
Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?
A quote is the mid-market rate with the provider’s margin taken out of it. Because that margin is expressed in the rate rather than itemised, it is easy to miss and is usually the bigger half of what a transfer costs. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
