The smallest and southernmost of the Nordic countries, Denmark is a low, tidy sprawl of one peninsula and some 400-odd islands where nearly everyone seems to be on a bike and 'hygge' passes for a national pastime.

  • Its flag, the Dannebrog, is generally recognised as the oldest continuously used national flag in the world.
  • LEGO was founded in the Danish town of Billund in 1932; the name comes from the Danish 'leg godt', meaning 'play well'.
  • Copenhagen is one of the most cycle-friendly cities on Earth, with more bicycles than cars.
  • Denmark is made up of the Jutland peninsula and several hundred islands, of which fewer than 80 are inhabited.
  • It consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the world in the annual World Happiness Report.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A red field with a white off-centre Scandinavian cross, the 'Dannebrog', widely regarded as the oldest national flag still in use. Legend has it falling from the sky over a battlefield on 15 June 1219, but no surviving text tells that story for three centuries; the earliest reliable evidence of the flag is a Dutch armorial of about 1380.

A continent pretending to be a country - Australia is the only nation that fills an entire continent, with most of its 27 million people clinging to the coast while the red-dirt interior does its own thing.

  • It's home to the Great Barrier Reef, the largest living structure on Earth.
  • Around 80% of its mammals, including the kangaroo and koala, live nowhere else on the planet.
  • Canberra was purpose-built as a compromise capital because Sydney and Melbourne couldn't stop arguing over the honour.
  • It has more kangaroos than people.

WHAT THE FLAG MEANS

A blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, a large white seven-pointed Commonwealth Star below it, and the five white stars of the Southern Cross at the fly. Six of the big star's points stand for the states and the seventh for the territories; the Southern Cross marks Australia's place in the southern sky.

The receiver’s side of this corridor

Denmark keeps the krone inside a very narrow band against the euro under a formal arrangement, so this pair is effectively AUD/EUR with a fixed adjustment applied. Movement in it almost never originates in Copenhagen.

The exchange rate is set on the sending side - by the service the sender chooses in Australia - so the most useful thing a receiver can do happens before the transfer: share the live mid-market rate on this page so the sender can judge the margin in their quote. How the money arrives in Denmark determines any local receiving charges - bank-to-bank transfers can pass through intermediary banks that deduct handling fees.

Sending rather than receiving? The sender’s view of this corridor covers the same rate from the other side. The AUD/DKK converter page handles any amount. Receiving money from overseas explains the process end to end.

Euro-area rails under a currency that is not the euro

On 22 April 2025 the Danish krone began settling inside the Eurosystem's own machinery. Danish participants started settling wholesale and retail payments in kroner in the T2 service and in the instant settlement service beside it, which made Denmark the first central bank outside the euro area taking part in all three of those services. Danmarks Nationalbank now calls TARGET DKK the core of the Danish payment infrastructure and its own real-time gross settlement system.

The machinery is one thing and the currency is another. The European Central Bank's schemes for credit transfers, instant credit transfers and direct debits are denominated in euro, and Denmark sits on its list as a member state that does not use the euro. So a payment in kroner is not made under any of them. The same boundary decides who must check a payee's name against the account before releasing money, because that duty sits inside the euro regulation and reaches only euro transfers.

Denmark keeps a register that answers exactly the question of which account to pay a person into. NemKonto exists so that public authorities can pay people and companies without being told an account number, and every payment from a Danish public institution goes to it.

NemKonto runs one way only. The authorities can send money to it and, in the government's own words, cannot take money out of it or see the balance or the transactions. It is closed to a sender in another country, who still needs the recipient's account details handed over.

Cash is nearly gone and had to be protected by statute. Danmarks Nationalbank measured it at nine per cent of all payments in physical trade in 2025, against twenty-three per cent in 2017. What keeps it usable is section 81 of the Payments Act, under which a business taking payment must as a general rule accept cash between six in the morning and ten at night.

Common questions

How much Danish krone will I receive in Denmark?

A little less than the mid-market figures above. The service the sender uses in Australia sets the rate and fees; local receiving banks in Denmark can also apply their own charges depending on how the transfer arrives.

The sender asked for my details - what will they need?

Whatever their transfer service asks for on the receiving side - typically your full legal name and local bank account details in Denmark. Give the name exactly as your bank records it; mismatches are the most common reason a transfer is delayed.

Why did I receive less than the rate on this page suggests?

No retail provider transacts at the mid-market rate - it is the midpoint of the wholesale market. What separates it from a quoted rate is margin, and margin is normally a larger cost than any advertised fee. On a bank-to-bank transfer an intermediary bank can also deduct a handling charge in transit.
